  IRS FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

I have an ongoing federal tax problem. Where can I go for assistance?

If you have an ongoing issue with the IRS that has not been resolved through normal processes, or you have suffered, or are about to suffer a significant hardship as a result of the administration of the tax laws, contact the Taxpayer Advocate Service. As an independent organization within the IRS we help taxpayers resolve problems with the IRS and recommend changes that will prevent the problems. Call (414) 297-3046 in Milwaukee or 1-877-777-4778 elsewhere, or see Publication 1546 , The Taxpayer Advocate Service of the IRS.

Where can I suggest improvements to IRS services?

If you have a complaint or suggestion for the IRS, the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel listens to taxpayers, identifies taxpayers' issues and makes suggestions for improving IRS service and customer satisfaction. The TAP acts as a two-way conduit; serving as a focus group for the IRS providing input on strategic initiatives, as well as providing a venue for raising issues identified by citizens. Contact the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, toll free, at 1-888-912-1227.

If you don't have Internet access, you can find out the status of your tax return and your refund by calling (800) 829-1954 (new refund hotline) or (800) 829-4477 (automated refund line).
